“Just casually changing my Bone Structure”

Jenna Marbles. Watch her.

Contouring is probably my most favourite thing in makeup, and I would happily have spent all my money on that course just on this segment. When I wake up in the morning looking like I’ve had an anaphylactic reaction to my pillow case, or you know, been crying for 3 hours, contouring is the sweet secret to success and probably the universe.

Contouring brings back the 3D shape to your face after all your foundation is slapped on and is the reason why all models and people on TV appear to have been genetically blessed with good bone structure. It’s actually all a conspiracy – go google Oprah, her whole face is immaculately contoured but her makeup artist probably gets paid pretty well to do that every day.

Professionally we usually apply contour with a deeper shade of foundation before applying powder which creates a more natural shadow, but the same look can be achieved without the sticky mess using a powder. Bronzer or a contour kit (see Sleek contour kit) can be used. Apply it under the cheekbones, jawline, temples, hairline and even down each side of the nose and eye sockets – the idea is to create a traditionally aesthetically pleasing oval face shape by shading out all the crap we don’t want people staring at.

Kevyn Aucoin’s image below is a makeup favourite for where to apply. Final trick is to blend that baby out til it fades perfectly into your foundation. We are not Lindsay Lohan. No streaks please. Then add highlight to the bits you do want people to see – cheekbones, forehead, chin, brow bone, and bridge of the nose. Voila – Tyra Banks.

If you love the “natural” look and normally only go powder/foundation and some mascara, throw some contouring in there and see how many more compliments you receive – please – send me your tally!

All my love,

I went away this weekend and forgot my bronzer at my house. I have never felt so naked in my life.
